Google Authenticator for iPhone updated, but don’t get it yet

Google Authenticator is one of the most useful and important applications available for any mobile operating system, not just iOS. The app generates unique security codes for various online services if you have two-factor authentication enabled for your accounts. Recently, Google pushed an update to its Google Authenticator App for iPhone that brings a totally new user interface and support for Retina display.

The much-awaited update brings support for Apple’s retina display technology as well as the support for iPhone 5’s 4-inch display. The new look is clean and minimalist based on the cards interface that has appeared on other Google apps. The update brings various improvements and bug fixes as well.

However, don’t hit the update button right now. It seems that the application came with a major bug that wipes all your codes in Google Authenticator after updating, meaning you have to setup all the accounts from scratch. The issue has been reported widely on Twitter, and it is recommended not to update if you have the older version of Google Authenticator installed on your iPhone. Google is aware of the issue and is trying resolve it.

Recently, the company also pulled the update from the App Store.

In case you are not using it, I would definitely suggest you enable two-factor authentication for all your accounts. Google Authenticator provides an easy way to generate security codes that are refreshed after every few seconds, so you don’t have to wait for the SMS to bring the code.
