MapMuse today announced the release of the Bizarre Foods Locator app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The app, a map-based directory and travel guide of places featured on the hit Travel Channel program, Bizarre Foods, connects fans with nearly 700 restaurants and businesses they’ve watched host Andrew Zimmern visit.
“Bizarre Foods fans around the world have been watching Zimmern visit these incredible places for 7 seasons now,” says Mike Pilon, owner of MapMuse. “Now they can visit the places themselves.” The show follows Zimmern as he travels to different cities and regions around the world to sample exotic and occasionally downright bizarre cuisine. While app users may not be interested in, say, foraging for beetles in the Kalahari Desert, Pilon believes there are more than enough restaurants and activities in major cities to keep even the most ardent fans occupied. “There are ten Bizarre Foods locations in Manhattan alone,” he says. “You can pretty much go anywhere and find a place Zimmern has visited.”

Although the name and approximate location of each featured restaurant and activity is provided at some point during episode, finding their exact addresses and phone numbers requires painstaking research. The Bizarre Foods Locator provides all of this information, as well as a handful of other handy features aimed to enrich user experience. Each listing comes with web links, GPS enabled driving directions, full contact details, episode details, and even a summary of the bizarre foods Zimmern eats there. Users are also encouraged to submit photos and reviews of the locations they visit. “It’s a bit like a highly specialized Yelp for Bizarre Foods fans,” says Pilon.
In the interest of including fans of the show who don’t have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, MapMuse has also provided a free, interactive web map of Bizarre Foods locations on their website. It has most of the functionality of the app, and identical data. Both the web map and app will be periodically updated as new episodes air, free-of-charge. MapMuse will also likely release a Droid version of the app sometime in the future.
MapMuse, an internet and app development company based out of Reston, VA has a long history of developing apps based on food TV shows. Among its App Store catalog, one can find titles such as the “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives Locator,” the “No Reservations Restaurant Locator,” the “Best Thing I Ever Ate Locator,” and the “Top Chef Restaurant Locator.” Users can add restaurants from other shows to their Bizarre Foods map via in-app purchases.
