How can Flickr compete with Instagram? More filters. Well, it’s more than that, but there are certainly more filters in the most recent update to the Flickr app for iPhone. Yahoo has also added some more tweaks and features to the filter interface. The process of taking photos has been improved, as well.
Yahoo essentially ignored Flickr for years, allowing young upstarts like Instagram to become firmly entrenched in the mobile device ecosystem. Now with former Googler Marissa Mayer at the helm, the company is doubling down on the products that work, and that includes Flickr. The app has seen big updates on Android and iOS in recent months, but this one is perhaps the most focused at Instagram. In the past Flickr started offering 1TB of free space to all users, which got the enthusiasts interested once again.
This time Yahoo has added a ton of new filters, and you can test them out before you even take a picture. Flickr can now overlay the filter in the viewfinder when taking pictures within the app. This way you can get a feel for the composition of the shot, taking into consideration the effect the filter will have.
Adding new filters is one thing, but the app now also lets you customize each filter after you take a picture. You can tweak the vignette size, light bleed effects, and wear patterns. It combines additional elements present in some photo filter apps, but it does it all within the single filter interface.
Some new editing tools have also tagged along in the new update. Auto-enhancements, cropping, sharpen, color balance, white balance, and more are all in the app for free. The interface has also been cleaned up a bit on the editing screen.
If you’re interested, Flickr is a free app connected to a free service. You can’t complain about that. The app is, however, only designed for the iPhone.
